Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon by Silver Oak Cellars
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a deep ruby hue with plum highlights, reflecting the concentration and ripeness of the fruit.
Nose
The nose reveals remarkable aromatic complexity with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry. Fragrances of cedar, vanilla and black pepper gradually emerge, accompanied by floral touches of strawberry blossom and fresh carnation, as well as subtle spicy nuances from aging in American oak barrels.
Palate
On the palate, the wine seduces with its silky, elegant attack. Black fruit flavors dominate with notes of black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant, enriched by hints of café au lait, chocolate and spice. The tannic structure, perfectly integrated, brings finesse without aggressiveness. The finish lingers with persistence on notes of cherry, blackberry and woody spices, offering a tasting experience that is both delicate and full.
Food and wine pairing
This 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon pairs ideally with grilled meats, particularly a barbecued steak whose smoky aromas echo the wine's woody notes. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked dishes such as braised beef ribs or a hearty stew. Aged cheeses also make an excellent pairing, enhancing the aromatic complexity of this wine.
Service and storage
The 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon can be enjoyed now thanks to its approachable style, but also has aging potential through to around 2042. A serving temperature between 16 and 18°C will allow its aromatic qualities to be fully expressed.
Other characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 14.7% vol., reflecting a balance between concentration and elegance.
An elegant and silky Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon by Silver Oak Cellars
The estate
Founded in 1972 by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer, Silver Oak Cellars has established itself as one of California's most distinctive producers by focusing exclusively on Cabernet Sauvignon aged in American oak barrels. Today led by David Duncan as Executive Chairman and Jared Fix as CEO, the estate manages nineteen vineyards spread across Napa Valley and Alexander Valley. Silver Oak stands out for owning its own cooperage, The Oak Cooperage, located in Missouri, making the house the first North American winery to have full control over its barrel production. Both production facilities, in Oakville and Alexander Valley, have achieved LEED Platinum certification, reflecting the estate's environmental commitment.
The vineyard
The 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comes from several plots located in the prestigious Napa Valley region of California. The estate's vineyards benefit from varied terroirs, including the Jump Rock Vineyard with its rust-red rocky soils across eighteen acres, and the Navone Vineyard in St. Helena, characterized by gravelly, loamy soils across eight acres. This diversity of terroirs brings complexity and depth to the final wine, allowing it to fully express the unique character of the Napa Valley appellation.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage in California was marked by contrasting climatic conditions, with heatwaves and wildfires that raised concerns. However, in Napa Valley, atmospheric patterns and winds limited the impact of smoke on most plots. Grapes harvested before the most intense episodes avoided any significant contamination. Despite a 13.9% reduction in yield, mainly attributed to natural water stress, grape quality proved remarkable, allowing for the production of balanced and expressive wines.
Winemaking and aging
The 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted following Silver Oak Cellars' traditional philosophy. After vinification, the wine was aged for twenty-four months in new American oak barrels from the estate's own cooperage. These barrels, made from white oak at least eighty years old and naturally seasoned for twenty-four months, receive a medium-light toast that develops aromas of vanilla and sweet spice. This extended aging allows for a harmonious integration between the wine's components and the oak influences, creating Silver Oak's signature silky character.
Grape varieties
