With a reputation that has shifted from the Italian Mediterranean coast to the international stage, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is one of the finest names in Italy. Founded in 1981, this Tuscan gem is now owned and managed by the Frescobaldi family. In the space of a few decades, the exceptional know-how of the house, combined with the support from the consultant oenologist, Michel Rolland, and the oenologist, Axel Heinz, has enabled the estate to establish its international reputation all while reinterpreting the finesse of Italian wines that highlight a great terroir.
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia watches over a vineyard which, thanks to its various exposures, benefits both from a refreshing sea breeze and is naturally protected against cold winds that occur during winter. Located not far from the Bolgheri hills, this terroir owes its uniqueness to its patchwork of sandy-clay soils of marine, alluvial and volcanic origin.
It is thus within this preserved landscape that the grape varieties, making up the blend of these fine Tuscan wines, develop a pure and refined expression.
The mild, rainy winter was marked by frost that did not affect the vineyards, which were still in the budding stage. The warm spring with its moderate rainfall favoured a regular vegetative development. The intense rainfall recorded in mid-June preceded a particularly hot and dry period until the end of August. Despite these extreme conditions, the veraison was even. The rainfall at the end of August combined with alternating sunny days and cool nights salvaged the vineyard and were ideal conditions for refining the ripening of the grapes.
The vinification and ageing
Vinification by plot in small steel tanks, as well as alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 10 months, partly in barrels and partly in concrete tanks, seeking to find the perfect balance between the tannic structure and the expression of fresh, bright fruit.
The wine has a beautiful ruby red colour with violet highlights.
Complex and expressive, the nose blends red fruit and Mediterranean shrubs with subtle spicy and tobacco notes.
The palate is seduced by the wine’s velvety and silky feel. The finish is lively and persistent, with a pleasant acidity.
