An exceptional Extra Brut Franciacorta by Ca' del Bosco in Lombardy

The estate

Founded in the 1970s by Maurizio Zanella in Erbusco, Ca' del Bosco embodies the excellence of sparkling wines from Lombardy. Since the first plantings in 1968, the estate now extends over 8 communes of Franciacorta. Maurizio Zanella transformed the family property of Annamaria Clementi into an essential reference. The ultra-modern infrastructure, the progressive conversion to organic farming and the philosophy fusing oenology and art distinguish this House.

The vineyard

The Cuvée Prestige Edizione 48 Extra Brut comes from a selection of Franciacorta vineyards, distributed across several communes. The Chardonnay comes from 185 plots located in Erbusco, Adro, Cazzago San Martino, Corte Franca, Iseo and Passirano, with vines averaging 25 years of age. The Pinot Blanc comes from 8 plots in Passirano, where the vines are 32 years old on average. As for the Pinot Noir, it is cultivated on 52 plots in Erbusco, Provaglio d'Iseo and Passirano, with vines averaging 21 years of age.

The cuvée

The Cuvée Prestige Edizione 48 Extra Brut is the result of a multi-vintage blend composed of 88% base wines from the 2023 vintage, completed by 10% reserve wines from 2022 and 2% reserve wines from 2021.

The vintage

The 2023 vintage experienced a cold and rainy spring with frost risks at budbreak, followed by a cool summer until mid-August, then about twenty days of heat. The harvest, carried out during the second ten days of August 2023, allowed for the collection of early fruit with high acidity and excellent sugar concentration, while later harvests revealed notes of riper fruit.

Winemaking and aging

The Ca' del Bosco method applied to the Cuvée Prestige Edizione 48 Extra Brut begins with manual harvesting in small crates. The grapes are sorted, chilled and then manually selected before passing through a "berry spa" comprising three soaking vats and a drying tunnel. Pressing takes place in an oxygen-free press. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The base wines are kept until March, about 7 months, to settle and mature before blending. The cuvée is then aged on lees for at least 2 years. Bottling takes place between April and June of the year following the harvest, for an average maturation on lees of 25 months. Disgorgement is carried out in an oxygen-free environment using a proprietary process.

Grape varieties

This Lombardy wine is made from a blend of Chardonnay (80.5%), Pinot Noir (18%) and Pinot Blanc (1.5%).
