A fresh and complex great Italian wine from Brunello di Montalcino

The estate

Considered a pioneer in the art of Italian winemaking, Castello Banfi is a family-owned and operated vineyard in the Tuscany region of Italy. The estate also has properties in Piedmont, Principessa Gavia and Vigne Regali. The Banfi family has always worked with great respect for tradition. Over the years, it has gained worldwide recognition for its dedication to its work and the excellence of its wines. Banfi is one of the founders in the research on the cloning of the Sangiovese vine, always with the aim of producing great Tuscan wines.

The vineyard

Poggio alle Mura 2016 from Castello Banfi is a Brunello di Montalcino wine that stems from vineyards which descend from the historic castle of Poggio alle Mura, down a slope that is perfect for cultivating the Brunello Sangiovese. The vines were planted in 1992 on a hillside at an altitude of 210 to 220 metres. Here the soil is influenced by limestone and sand, and is rich in rounded rocks.

Winemaking and ageing

Once the grapes were harvested, they macerated for 12 to 13 days. Alcoholic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel and wooden vats. The 2-year aging in French (90%) and Slavonian (10%) oak barrels was completed by an additional 12 months of bottle ageing to give the wine its unique aromatic character.
