Description
A rich, aromatic Chianti Classico wine
The estate
Nestled at an altitude of 500 metres, the Castello di Ama estate reflects a rich historical heritage: more than five centuries ago, the small village of “Ama” was already renowned for its farming and its production of wines from Tuscany.
Castello di Ama tends nearly 80 hectares of vines, including the illustrious terroirs of Bellavista, San Lorenzo, Casuccia and Montebuoni. Located in the historic Chianti production area, they have been passed down from generation to generation.
The vineyard
Produced since 1978, Castello di Ama's Vigneto Bellavista Gran Selezione is a Chianti Classico wine made from a 22.82-hectare vineyard planted at an altitude of between 460 and 525 metres. This terraced terroir comprises 22 plots on clay-limestone soils.
The vintage
The start of 2019 was cool, with significant temperature swings between day and night, and was followed by a relatively mild February. Wet, cool conditions in early spring led to coulure, which reduced yields. A hot, dry summer then encouraged the berries to ripen well right up to the harvest, which took place from 5 September to 10 October.
Vinification and ageing
Plot-by-plot vinification with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with manual pump-overs. Total maceration of 22 to 26 days depending on the grape variety. After the first draining, the wine is transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation. The blend is assembled once malolactic fermentation is complete. The wine is then aged for around 14 months in fine-grain oak barrels (40% new and 60% one year old).
