Description
The refinement and complexity of a Chianti Classico wine
The estate
Nestled at an altitude of 500 metres, the Castello di Ama estate has a rich historical heritage. More than five centuries ago, the small village of “Ama” was already renowned for its agriculture and its production of wines from Tuscany.
Castello di Ama watches over nearly 80 hectares of vineyards. They include the illustrious terroirs of Bellavista, San Lorenzo, Casuccia and Montebuoni, which lie in the historic Chianti production area and have been handed down from generation to generation.
The vineyard
Produced since 1985, Vigneto La Casuccia Gran Selezione by Castello di Ama is a Chianti Classico wine crafted from a 12.58-hectare vineyard. Spread across 9 plots at an altitude of between 470 and 495 metres, this exceptional terroir rests on clay-limestone soils.
The vintage
The beginning of 2019 was cool, with significant temperature swings between day and night, and was followed by a relatively mild February. Damp, cool conditions in early spring caused coulure, which reduced yields. A hot, dry summer encouraged the berries to ripen well right up to the harvest, which took place from 5 September to 10 October.
Vinification and ageing
Plot-by-plot vinification using indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with manual pump-overs. Total maceration of 25 to 27 days depending on the grape variety. After the first racking, the wine is transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation. Blending takes place at the end of malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for approximately 14 months in fine-grained oak barrels (40% new and 60% one year old).
Blend
Sangiovese (80%)
