An exceptional champagne from the Billecart-Salmon House

A prestigious cuvée from the Billecart-Salmon Champagne House, the Le Clos Saint-Hilaire Brut 2002 was awarded 100 points by James Suckling. This exceptional cuvée is produced in limited quantities, with only 3,500 to 6,500 numbered bottles released per vintage.

Perfectly capturing the expression of the 2002 vintage and revealing the personality of one of Champagne’s greatest terroirs, the Le Clos Saint-Hilaire Brut 2002 from Billecart-Salmon is made from a 1-hectare plot of old Pinot Noir vines, planted in 1964 and located in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. This champagne is 100% vinified in barrels, with 16 long years spent maturing on lees. No dosage is added at the disgorgement.

At the tasting, the Le Clos Saint-Hilaire Brut 2002 cuvée displays a beautiful, intense golden-yellow colour, with golden highlights. The bouquet, right away, suggests a perfectly ripe champagne. Honey notes perfume the nose, while aromas of ripe fruit and spices come through afterwards. The attack in the mouth reveals a deep and deliciously tasty, profound texture, along with flavours of candied citrus and brioche (panettone). The minerality of the terroir is expressed on a magnificent finish, which leaves behind a mouthwatering sensation. A truly gourmet champagne, the Le Clos Saint-Hilaire Brut 2002 will pair beautifully with gourmet recipes of fish or seafood. An exceptional champagne, still offering a nice potential for evolution in the bottle.

    Wine Advocate-Parker :
Entirely vinified in oak and disgorged in May 2018, after 15 years on the lees in bottle, the 2002 Millésime Brut Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is a single-plot Blanc de Noirs from Pinot Noir vines planted in Mareuil-sur-Ay in 1964. Highly fine and pure on the deep, elegant and spicy nose, with intense mirabelle and apricot flavors, this is a pure, salty, very finessed yet tensioned, complex, mineral and refreshing Pinot with intense and well-concentrated fruit, a juicy texture and persistent structure. The finish is very long but pure, fresh, salty and, in any case, highly stimulating! Total production: 3,700 bottles. Tasted November 2018.
