A complex, aromatic and refined champagne by Moët & Chandon

The producer

The Moët & Chandon Champagne House was founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, a visionary wine merchant, who quickly made Moet Chandon a reference in the highest courts of Europe. A few years later his grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët, developed the reputation of the house internationally.

Jean-Rémy Moët notably created the iconic cuvée of the house, the Moet and Chandon Imperial, in honor of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who visited the estate on several occasions and who allegedly invented the tradition of bashing open a bottle of Moët Chandon champagne to celebrate a victory with his troops.

Owned by the LVMH group since 1987, the Moet and Chandon Champagne House produces, from a very rigorous selection of Champagne terroirs, unique cuvées recognised across borders for their quality and for their seductive personality.

The wine

Made from wines aged and blended over 10 years ago in three different containers (steel, oak and glass), Moët & Chandon's MCIII 1st Edition champagne is the perfect expression of the house's avant-garde and innovative philosophy combined with a pleasurable tasting experience.

Each wine and each year have been rigorously selected by the Cellar Master. The 10 years of ageing on lees is completed by an additional year of ageing after disgorgement.

Refined and presented in a luxurious box, this champagne enhances the nuances of each of the three ageing environments. An innovative, complex and harmonious champagne.

Its dosage is 5 g/litre.

The blend

The blend of MCIII 1st Edition by Moët & Chandon is made up of three thirds of wines, each of which harmoniously expresses the Champagne grape varieties, Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.

The first third (37.5%) is composed of a base wine from the 2003 harvest and a blend of Pinot Noir (50%) and Chardonnay (50%) aged in stainless steel vats.

The second third (37.5%) blends 3 Grand Vintage base wines, the richness of the 2002, the vivacity of the 2000 vintage and the elegance of the 1998 vintage. This blend of still Grand Vintage wines aged between 1 and 5 years, complemented by a selection of wines aged for 6 months on average, was aged in oak barrels.

The final third (25%) is also made up of 3 base Grand Vintage wines, the richness of the 1999, the vivacity of the 1993 vintage and the elegance of the 1998. This blend of 5 to 10-year-old Grand Vintage champagnes has been aged in bottle on lees.

MCIII 1ère Édition Champagne by Moët & Chandon: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

The first nose reveals fragrances of coffee, malt, mocha, praline, liquorice, tonka bean, pecan, ripe wheat and pastries. When aerated, the bouquet gains in intensity through notes of citrus peel, lemon, kumquat, bergamot and verbena. This delicious complexity is combined with a minerality that gives off iodine, toasted and flinty notes.

The attack is lively, silky and refined. The palate is seduced by this champagne’s finesse and elegance. Throughout the tasting experience, the well-controlled power bledns with astructure and an aromatic character that combines notes of candied citrus fruits, stone fruits (plum and nectarine), dried fig, date and warm spices (vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg). Precise and mineral, the finish offers an alluring salinity.
