Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 1999
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a beautiful garnet colour, enhanced by subtle violet hues that testify to its depth.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet expresses notes of very ripe black fruits, subtly underlined by a touch of vanilla. Over time, nuances of cedar, graphite and blond tobacco come to enrich this complex palette.
Palate
The attack is elegant and reveals soft blackcurrant flavours, accompanied by slightly spicy and toasted notes. The whole is particularly harmonious, supported by round, ripe tannins that give this wine undeniable charm and great pleasure.
Food and wine pairing
This great red wine traditionally pairs wonderfully with roasted or grilled red meats, feathered game, as well as slow-simmered dishes in sauce.
The elegance of a great Pauillac from Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
The estate
Located in the heart of the Bordeaux region, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a true benchmark. While the estate's winegrowing origins date back to the 16th century, it was in 1855 that the property took its definitive shape with the construction of the current building and its official classification. Today, François-Xavier Borie heads this family estate. The brand stands out for the remarkable geographical continuity of its terroir since its creation and produces wines renowned for their classicism.
The vineyard
The terroir, located within the Pauillac appellation, extends over 55 hectares in a single block around the residence. The vines, averaging 38 years old, are planted at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare on deep gravel rises resting on a limestone subsoil. The estate favours exclusively mechanical soil work through ploughing and applies the principles of sustainable viticulture to preserve its environment.
The vintage
The year 1999 was marked by an overall temperate growing season. A few rainy episodes punctuated the cycle, requiring great vigilance from the teams to ensure perfect health and optimal ripeness. The entirely hand-picked harvest took place under mild conditions from 20 September to 4 October.
Winemaking and ageing
Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes undergo a rigorous double sorting on vibrating tables, before and after destemming. Fermentation is accompanied by a long maceration period of around three weeks to gently extract the matter. The Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 1999 is then aged in fine-grained French oak barrels, 50% of which are new, for a period of 16 to 18 months.
