Vinum

Displays elegance despite its richness, thanks to the wine’s particularly refined tannins; the long finish is, for now, at most slightly impacted by a pronounced oak-driven character.

Jeff Leve

Leve Jeff

Medium-bodied, silky, refined, lush, and polished, the wine is already delivering its core of dark chocolate-covered black cherries, plums, and truffles. And, as good as it is now, this sensuously textured, plummy beauty is only going to get better as it ages. The wine was produced from 100% old vine Merlot. Drink from 2026–2048.

Weinwisser

Intoxicating blueberry bouquet, fresh bilberry juice, beguiling violet perfume, licorice, chocolate pralines, and dark graphite. On the sublime palate, a creamy texture, cocoa-like tannin framework, supportive verve, and tightly knit body. The focused, aromatic finish is a firework of wild cherry, preserved figs, exotic woods, and noble astringency.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Black color. Intense, fine, fruity, pure, and creamy nose. Precise on the attack, aromatic mid-palate, with a lovely texture and body; the wine gains energy after the mid-palate while remaining caressing. It finishes with a long, sappy, fragrant finish, with a hint of citrus. 100% Merlot. Yield: 25 hl/ha. Production: 5,000 bottles.

Description

The richness and finesse of a Pomerol red wine

The estate

Owned by the Raynaud-Lebreton family and with origins dating back to 1477, Château La Fleur de Gay is placed on the medieval road from Saint-Émilion to Guitres. The property is located on what used to be the historic village of Pomerol, the hamlet of Pignon, to the north of the appellation.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château La Fleur de Gay stretches across 2 hectares of vines and benefits from a very large terroir typical of Pomerol. The vines are located on 3 plots on the high terrace of the appellation. The 2022 vintage of this Pomerol wine is made from vines planted on parcels of pure Lafleur clay (14%), Günzian gravel resting on Gay clay (46%) and high gravel on Groupey clay (40%).

The vintage

2022 will remain in the estate's memory as the vintage combining very low yields (as in 1961) and major water stress (as in 1947). At the end of March, budburst preceded a frost episode (nights of 2 to 4 April) which, despite the protection measures put in place, affected the vineyard by 30 to 35%. Thereafter, the vine cycle was marked by sunny conditions, high temperatures and low rainfall. Flowering was uniform. Three heatwaves were recorded between June and August, offset by storms at the end of the season. The harvest began on 6 September 2022 and took place under exceptional conditions.

Winemaking and ageing

Harvests done by hand. Very gentle extraction to preserve the brightness of the fruit. Ageing was carried out in barrels (60% new, 40% of one wine).
