Description

Tasting notes and recommendations for Petit Mouton 2025 from Château Mouton Rothschild

Tasting

Appearance
This wine reveals a deep ruby red color, enhanced by elegant violet reflections that attest to its youth and fine maturity.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet is complex and layered. It opens with aromas of small black berries, raspberry, and wild strawberry, highlighted by touches of menthol and graphite.

Palate
The attack is juicy and lively. The tannic structure is both fine, precise, and powerful, offering an athletic texture on the mid-palate. The whole is rich, taut, and expansive, leading into a long finish marked by beautiful minerality.

Food and wine pairings
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with flavorful meats such as game or venison. It will also perfectly accompany grilled or roasted red meats without overly heavy sauces, as well as herb-seasoned poultry. To finish the meal, aged hard cheeses will be an ideal choice.

Serving and cellaring
Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2025 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 17 and 18°C. Decanting beforehand is recommended to allow it to breathe. With excellent aging potential, it can be enjoyed now but will reach its peak and be drinkable until around 2033.

The elegance and power of a Second Wine from Pauillac by Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate
The modern history of Château Mouton Rothschild began with its creation under its current name in 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton. Located in the Bordeaux region, this illustrious estate has established itself as a world-renowned property, famous for its labels illustrated by great artists and its spirit of innovation. Today, the children of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild—Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild—lead this prestigious estate, perpetuating the excellence of this mythical growth.

The vineyard
Located in the prestigious Pauillac appellation, the terroir dedicated to this cuvée covers a planted area of 82 hectares. The vines, with an average age of 44 years, thrive on soils composed of deep gravel resting on a clay-limestone base. This poor, well-draining terroir forces the vines to draw their resources from deep within, thereby promoting optimal grape concentration.

The vintage
The year 2025 began with a mild and slightly dry winter, encouraging early budburst on March 31. April was particularly rainy before giving way, from May onward, to summer-like conditions that lasted through the end of August. Flowering occurred quickly and evenly between May 22 and 27, followed by véraison from July 27 to 31. Marked water stress led to small, highly concentrated berries while maintaining excellent sanitary conditions. The return of cooler temperatures and some rainfall at the end of August completed the ripening process. The early harvest took place from September 5 to 20, yielding healthy and rich grapes, although overall yields were impacted by low rainfall.

Winemaking and aging
After manual harvesting in small crates, the berries are carefully sorted on vibrating tables before being transferred by gravity into oak vats. Aging then takes place over a period of 18 months, with 50% new barrels.

Grape varieties
Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2025 is a blend of 58% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, and 3% petit verdot.
