The elegance and freshness of a red wine from the Terrasses du Larzac
The estate
Founded in 1970 by Jean-Pierre Jullien, the Mas Cal Demoura estate is located in Jonquières, in the heart of the Languedoc, France. Its name, meaning "one must stay" in Occitan, reflects its founder's determination to showcase this terroir at a time when cooperative wineries dominated. A pioneer of the region's qualitative revival, the 17-hectare estate is now run by Isabelle and Vincent Goumard. Since taking over in 2004, the current owners have continued this pursuit of excellence with an environmentally respectful, biodynamic-certified approach.
The vineyard
Located within the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, the vineyard extends over very dry, stony soils composed of limestone gravel, marl and clay-limestone. This terroir enjoys a Mediterranean climate tempered by cool winds from the Larzac plateau, favouring strong temperature contrasts between day and night. The vines, averaging around forty years of age, are cultivated according to biodynamic principles with naturally low yields. The harvest is carried out by hand.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by extreme weather conditions. After a spring affected by frost and a June marked by hailstorms, summer arrived with intense heat and severe drought. Sunshine and wind helped protect the vines from disease. Harvest began in late August and stretched over a long period to ensure optimal ripeness for each plot, aided by welcome rainfall in late summer.
Winemaking and aging
After a thorough double sorting, both in the vineyard and at the winery, the grapes for Mas Cal Demoura 2022 are vinified plot by plot. Aging then takes place in various vessels, including demi-muids and foudres, with very limited use of new oak to preserve the expression of the fruit. The final blend of the different plots is made after twelve months of aging.
Grape varieties
This wine is a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, Carignan and Cinsault, in roughly equal proportions.
