Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2024
Tasting Notes
Appearance
This wine reveals a beautiful straw-yellow hue, subtly illuminated by green highlights.
Nose
Highly precise and richly concentrated, the bouquet opens with a striking minerality reminiscent of flint, slate and wet stone. It then evolves towards saline notes of sea spray and oyster shell, enriched by generous touches of brioche, toasted almond, spice and pistachio nougat, all underscored by delicately toasted oak.
Palate
The attack is taut, carried by a fine tannic structure and a lively acidity that gives the wine its backbone. The palate reveals an iodized freshness with notes of sea salt and caper, wrapped in a restrained, lemony richness. The alcohol and oak remain very discreet, giving way to a lingering finish with mineral and ferrous accents.
Food and Wine Pairing
This great white wine pairs beautifully with noble seafood such as lobster or langoustines roasted in butter, as well as pan-seared scallops. It will also elevate white meats and poultry served with a creamy mushroom sauce, or pressed, cooked-curd cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and Cellaring
The Yattarna Chardonnay 2024 shows exceptional ageing potential. It can be cellared and enjoyed from 2027 through to around 2047.
The precision and richness of a great Southern Australia Chardonnay from Penfolds
The Estate
Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, Penfolds is based at Magill Estate, near Adelaide in Southern Australia. Now owned by the Treasury Wine Estates group, this iconic brand has been under the winemaking direction of Peter Gago since 2002. Penfolds stands out for its unique philosophy of multi-regional blending and its strong commitment to sustainability. A true global icon, the estate combines a rich historical heritage with constant innovation to produce wines of exceptional quality, capable of rivalling the world's greatest crus.
The Vineyard
The grapes selected for this cuvée come from several Australian winegrowing regions renowned for their cool climates, namely Tumbarumba, the Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. The House prioritises fruit quality and suitability to the desired style above all, rather than a single terroir.
The Vintage
2024 stood out for its cool climatic conditions and long, steady growing seasons. Spring proved variable, which had the effect of moderating harvest yields. This was followed by a mild summer, which encouraged slow, consistent ripening of the berries, thereby preserving excellent natural acidity.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Yattarna Chardonnay 2024 was aged for a period of 8 months. The wine matured in French oak barrels, with 56% new barrels and 24% one-wine barrels.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from Chardonnay.
