Description
The structure and expression of a Saint-Émilion wine
The estate
Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion, Château La Tour Figeac was founded in 1879, at the time of its separation from Château Figeac to which it was attached. Since 1994, the Otto Maximilian Rettenmaier family has been at the head of the estate.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château La Tour Figeac benefits from an exceptional location in Saint-Émilion, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. The 14.6-hectare vineyard is situated between Château Cheval Blanc and Château Figeac. The vines, with an average age of 37 years, are planted on a beautiful gravelly-sandy terroir over deep clay. Since 1997, the vineyard of Château La Tour Figeac has been managed ecologically with the implementation of organic and biodynamic practices. Herbal teas and natural preparations are used to care for the vine, considering the entire ecosystem. The estate has gone even further in respect for the environment and the vineyard, as cereals are now planted between the vine rows to strengthen the soil and limit erosion.
Winemaking and aging
Rigorous sorting followed by destemming. Winemaking in small vats. Gentle extraction with punch-downs. Maceration for one month. Racking into barrels (50% new, 50% of one wine) for malolactic fermentation before aging for 15 months..
Blend
The Château La Tour Figeac 2016 is the result of a blend of Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Franc (30%).
