Dom Pérignon Vintage 2009: a champagne with perfectly contained power

The estate

Dom Pérignon champagne owes its name to Pierre Pérignon, the famous monk and cellar master of Abbey de Hautvillers in 1668, who was also known as Dom Pérignon. Legend says that Pierre Pérignon discovered what is known today as the Champagne method. As a point of interest, he taught this method to Benedictine monk, Thierry Ruinart, in 1669, which allowed Ruinart to become the first Champagne house in 1729. Since 1st January 2019, Vincent Chaperon has succeeded Richard Geoffroy as Dom Pérignon’s Cellar Master.

The wine

In essence, Dom Pérignon only exists as a vintage champagne. The Dom Pérignon Vintage champagne is made from an extremely rigorous selection of the best grapes. Depending on the quality of the fruit, Dom Pérignon chooses whether or not to declare each vintage. Acquiring great complexity and harmony as it ages, Dom Pérignon Vintage champagne is revealed only after more than 8 years of development and rest in the cellar.

The vintage

Despite a difficult start to the year in terms of weather conditions, the Dom Pérignon Vintage 2009 was able to make the most of a perfect August with hot and dry weather (with the exception of a day of hail on 4 September) up to the harvests, which began on 12 September.

Blend

The Dom Pérignon Vintage 2009 is made from a secret blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Tasting

Nose

On the nose, the Dom Pérignon Vintage 2009 develops fragrances of guava and the zest of spicy green grapefruit, along with notes of stone fruit, white peach and nectarine. After stirring slightly, the wine reveals touches of woody vanilla and warm, lightly toasted brioche.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is fruity, ripe, fleshy and of great depth. Rich and full-bodied, the Dom Pérignon Vintage 2009 is extremely consistent, with a perfectly contained power. An array of sensations can be felt, such as a silky, saline and sappy side, with bitterness and even tasty iodised touches.
