Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Grand Millésime 2016 Gosset
Tasting
Color
With a pale yellow hue, this champagne reveals great freshness and a delicate effervescence.
Nose
The bouquet opens with very fresh aromas of fennel, star anise and menthol. As it airs, generous notes of poached pear, nougat and almond develop harmoniously.
Palate
The attack is elegant, revealing a bouquet of fresh fruit including mirabelle plum, rhubarb and reinette apple. The mid-palate offers a lovely density, while the finish, crisp and fresh, lingers on tangy notes and fine, characteristic bitterness.
Food and Wine Pairing
This champagne pairs perfectly with pork lonzo or duck breast with figs or prunes. It also enhances scallops and oysters beautifully. For a sweet note, a rhubarb tart makes for a remarkable pairing.
Serving and Cellaring
The Grand Millésime 2016 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 8 and 10°C.
Other Characteristics
With a dosage of 4 g/l, this champagne falls into the Extra Brut category, offering a perfect balance between freshness and structure.
A Champagne of Character from the Oldest House in Champagne
The Estate
Established in 1584 in Aÿ, Gosset remains the oldest House in Champagne. Owned by the Renaud-Cointreau group since 1994 and led by Jean-Pierre Cointreau, it cultivates around 140 hectares of vines across the prestigious villages of Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Hautvillers and Cumières. The House's philosophy places the quality of the wine before the bubbles, producing wine-driven champagnes characterized by mineral freshness and deep vinosity. Odilon de Varine, Cellar Master since 2006, continues to uphold this signature style.
The Vineyard
The grapes for the Grand Millésime 2016 come exclusively from rigorously selected Grand and Premier Cru sites in Champagne. The villages of Ambonnay, Aÿ, Chamery, Cramant, Mailly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Passy, Pierry, Trépail and Vertus each contribute their own unique expression to this exceptional blend.
The Vintage
2016 was marked by a cool start to summer followed by a warm, sunny end of season. As the Champagne saying goes: "July makes the bouquet, August makes the must." These contrasting weather conditions resulted in grapes of remarkable quality.
Winemaking and Aging
The Grand Millésime 2016 was bottled at the end of the spring following the harvest, then cellared in June 2017. After disgorgement, the bottles rest in the cellars for at least 6 additional months, allowing the champagne to fully develop its aromatic complexity.
