Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for Clos des Goisses 2016 by Philipponnat
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a deep, radiant golden hue.
Nose
Highly elegant, the bouquet opens with delicate aromas of white-fleshed fruits and elderflower. After a few moments of aeration, indulgent notes of vanilla and salted butter caramel emerge, enhanced by a hint of spice reminiscent of ginger.
Palate
The attack is smooth and perfectly balanced. The palate reveals generous flavors of peach, pear, and ripe yellow fruits, धीरे gliding toward subtle notes of pear eau-de-vie. The finish, remarkably long, stands out for its salinity and touches of white pepper.
Food and wine pairings
This cuvée enhances seafood dishes, pairing beautifully with lobster or iodine-rich fish. With age, it will also pair remarkably well with aged soft cheeses.
Service and cellaring
It is recommended to decant Clos des Goisses 2016 before tasting, ideally served at a temperature between 46 and 50 °F. Already displaying fine maturity thanks to its extended aging, this wine has exceptional aging potential and can be cellared until around 2048.
The pure expression of a great champagne by Philipponnat
The estate
The family’s history dates back to 1522, although the Champagne House Philipponnat was officially founded in 1910. Located in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, this prestigious house manages a vineyard of around twenty hectares. Now led by Charles Philipponnat and owned by the LANSON-BCC group, the estate stands out for its environmental commitment, certified High Environmental Value. The domain is globally renowned for its pioneering parcel-based approach and the preservation of ancestral expertise, producing cuvées of great purity that reflect the excellence of their terroir.
The vineyard
This cuvée comes exclusively from the legendary Clos des Goisses, a walled parcel covering 5.83 hectares. It is the steepest and oldest hillside in all of Champagne. Ideally south-facing in the commune of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the vines benefit from maximum sunlight. The soil consists of exceptional outcropping chalk, rich in active limestone, giving the grapes perfect ripeness and a unique minerality.
The vintage
The year 2016 began with mild conditions, quickly followed by severe winter and spring frosts. After a particularly wet spring, the weather shifted in August, giving way to a very sunny and warm summer. These conditions allowed for high-quality harvests between September 19 and October 3.
Winemaking and aging
The Clos des Goisses 2016 is vinified entirely in oak. To preserve optimal freshness, prevent any premature oxidation, and enhance the mineral tension of the terroir, malolactic fermentation is not carried out. This Extra-Brut champagne then benefits from extended aging of eight years on lees, resting peacefully in bottle at a constant temperature of 54 °F in the estate’s historic cellars.
Grape varieties
The blend of this Clos des Goisses 2016 by Philipponnat is composed of 68% pinot noir and 32% chardonnay.
