Robert Parker

William Kelley

Disgorged in June 2021, the latest release of Paillard's NV Extra-Brut Première Cuvée is showing very well out of the gates, and it's already expressive, bursting with aromas of ripe orchard fruit, freshly baked bread, brioche and citrus oil. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and precise, with a pinpoint mousse, bright acids and chalky grip on the finish, it's approachable now but also built to evolve with grace.

A well-balanced Champagne in an aperitif style, with subtle plushness to the mousse, offering lively lemony acidity and a pretty mix of white cherry, poached pear, smoke and ground anise notes, while a touch of almond lingers on the finish. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Disgorged July 2022. Drink now. 15,000 cases made, 950 cases imported.

Decanter

A lovely reductive smokiness fills the nose with promise. Creaminess and rounded freshness on the palate with a slight hint of development and spicy complexity, finely etched citric finish.

Zekun Shuai

A fine mineral layer atop subtle sourdough yeastiness, with lemon zest and green apples. Fruity and delineated on the palate, with generous, creamy bubbles and a flavorful finish. Quite approachable, but it ends dry. Disgorged in February 2022. Drink now.

The NV Extra Brut Première Cuvée is bright, aromatic and nicely lifted. Crushed rocks, mint, white pepper, slate and citrus fruit are all beautifully delineated. Brisk acids pull it all together on the close. This airy, nuanced Champagne from Bruno Paillard is a delight. The blend is 45% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay and 22% Meunier, with 32% reserve wines that date back to 1985. Disgorged: September 2022.

A bright yellow/straw color, the NV Champagne Premiere Cuvée Extra Brut is made from a blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay, and the remainder Meunier, with 20% aged in barrels and roughly a third of the blend coming from their perpetual reserve going back to 1985. Classic and rounded on the nose, with aromas of brioche, peach, hazelnut, and fresh flowers, the palate is supple and balanced, with full-bodied richness, a weightless feel, a refined and elegant mousse, and lasting notes of citrus oils through the finish. One of my favorite entry level wines, this consistently over-delivers and is going to drink well over the coming 8-10 years. Disgorged in September 2022.

La RVF

this 2019 base comes across as serious; the nose is fresh, conveying Champagne classicism without feeling narrow or reductive. The palate is wrapped in a seductive dosage, yet it remains coherent. The finish is precise and chiselled

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

This is the producer's nonvintage cuvée, dry in the house style and with good balance between freshness and fruitiness. Lightly textured and with taut acidity and crispness at the end, the Champagne is ready to drink.

Description

The balance of a subtly low-dosage Brut Champagne

The estate

Founded in Reims in 1981, Bruno Paillard is one of the youngest Champagne houses. With a rigorous selection of terroirs, exclusive use of first pressings, blending from an extensive collection of reserve wines, and aging times twice as long as required by the appellation’s specifications, the Bruno Paillard range reflects a constant pursuit of excellence and a desire to create a “very personal style.”

The vineyard

The Bruno Paillard House oversees an exceptional vineyard patiently assembled and spanning 32 hectares of vines across 15 crus, 12 of which are classified as “Grands Crus.” The vineyard brings together the outstanding terroirs of Oger, Le Mesnil sur Oger, Cumières, Verzenay, as well as the exceptional Cru des Riceys located in the south of Champagne.

The wine

Flagship cuvée of the Bruno Paillard House, “Brut Première Cuvée” is produced regardless of the vintage’s character, “in both plentiful and lean years.” With a very low dosage (6g/l), this Brut stands out for its purity and authenticity. The Brut Première Cuvée Bruno Paillard is crafted exclusively from the purest juice of the first pressing. The blend is made from a palette of 32 crus vinified separately in stainless steel vats and barrels, with a minimum of 25% reserve wines, reaching up to 48%.

Aging

Aging on the lees in bottles lasts at least 3 years, followed by a further 3 to 4 months of rest in the cellar after disgorgement. The disgorgement date is indicated on the back label.

Blend

Pinot Noir (45%), Chardonnay (33%), Pinot Meunier (22%).

Characteristics and tasting advice for Bruno Paillard’s Première Cuvée

Tasting

Appearance
On tasting, the Brut Première Cuvée Bruno Paillard displays a brilliant straw gold color, highlighting the liveliness and finesse of its effervescence.

Nose
Complex, the aromatic bouquet showcases the typicity of each grape variety in the blend. Citrus and fruit notes appear first, echoing the Chardonnay, before giving way to red fruit notes reminiscent of redcurrant, raspberry, and morello cherry, indicating the strong presence of Pinot Noir. Finally, Pinot Meunier stands out with suave and exotic notes. Over time, this champagne will develop floral and spicy notes as well as toasted aromas.

Palate
From the very first sip, the wine impresses with its liveliness and minerality, recalling the chalky identity of its terroir. Flavorful and indulgent, the palate is awakened by citrus notes and hints of sweet almond, followed by red and black fruit notes. The finish is precise and lingers beautifully.

Food & wine pairings

This Brut by Bruno Paillard can be served as an aperitif and will also pair beautifully with a meal thanks to its vinous structure.

Serving temperature

To fully appreciate the purity of this Brut Champagne, it is recommended to serve it at 9°C in a tulip-shaped stemmed glass to allow its aromas to fully express themselves.
