Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Clos Pompadour Blanc de Blancs 2017 by Pommery
Tasting
Appearance
A pale gold colour, enlivened by an effervescence of great finesse with persistent streams of fine bubbles rising to the surface.
Nose
The bouquet, both honeyed and vanilla-scented, reveals aromas of greengage, mandarin and lemon paste. This fruity ensemble is enriched by floral nuances of verbena, orange blossom, bergamot and white flowers, all enhanced by subtle hints of pastry.
Palate
The attack is clean and carried by a chalky minerality. The texture, silky and finely chiselled, offers superb freshness as well as a beautiful breadth. The tasting concludes with a persistent finish, marked by elegant iodine and citrus accents.
Food and wine pairings
Perfect as an aperitif, this wine pairs wonderfully with seafood, particularly oysters and shellfish, or with caviar served on blinis with crème fraîche. It also brilliantly accompanies white fish, aged cheeses such as Gouda or Cheddar, as well as more daring dishes like light fried preparations.
Serving and cellaring
Offered exclusively in magnum format, the Clos Pompadour Blanc de Blancs 2017 benefits from a slower oxidation. This technical choice gives it a superior cellaring potential and allows a gradual and complex development of its aromas over time.
Other characteristics
This exceptional cuvée stands out for its dry profile, with no perceptible sweetness. It embodies the perfect alliance of finesse, elegance, maturity and minerality, thus offering a pure expression of its terroir.
The elegance and purity of a Champagne crafted by Pommery
The estate
Founded in 1858 in Reims, in the heart of the Champagne wine region, the Pommery House made its mark on history thanks to Madame Pommery, a pioneer of the Brut style. Today, this prestigious brand belongs to the Vranken-Pommery Monopole group, led by Nathalie Vranken, current Managing Director and President. The estate stands out for its environmental commitment and its exceptional architectural heritage, housing immense underground chalk cellars listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the wines patiently age.
The vineyard
This cuvée comes from the Clos Pompadour, the largest walled vineyard in Champagne, stretching over 25 hectares within the city of Reims itself. Protected by high walls, the vines benefit from a warmer microclimate that ensures optimal ripening of the grapes. The terroir lies on a chalky soil that acts as a natural water reservoir and brings a strong minerality. The vines are derived from the estate's historic massal selection.
Winemaking and aging
For the creation of the Clos Pompadour Blanc de Blancs 2017, part of the juice is vinified in stoneware vessels. The natural porosity of this material allows a different expression that is highly respectful of the terroir. The wine then undergoes extended ageing on lees in the chalk cellars, thus developing its full aromatic complexity.
